Shooting dance with Marrugeku.

Earlier this year I had the opportunity to shoot with Marrugeku at the West Australian Ballet Centre in Maylands. Marrugeku is a dance-centred arts organisation that, in their own words, “builds bridges and breaks down walls between urban and remote dance communities, between Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists and between local and global situations”.

Working between Broome and Sydney, Marrugeku tours productions across urban and regional Australia. Ahead of their Cut the Sky production touring regional Western Australia, team members were in Perth for rehearsals at West Australian Ballet, and I joined them for an afternoon to take some new website headshots and to document them at work in preparation for the tour.

The shoot was my first time visiting the West Australian Ballet Centre, which is a beautiful building that was previously the site of the Blind Institute, and is described stylistically as “Inter-War Stripped Classical”. WA Ballet have been there since 2012, and the spaces I visited were great for their current purpose.

I always enjoy chatting with people for portraits/headshots, with this shoot being no exception, but the opportunity to be in the room to experience and photograph the rehearsals was a real privilege.
